Ben Ford: The Chef with a Hollywood Connection
Ben Ford, an American chef and the son of the famous actor Harrison Ford, is a man who clearly enjoys good food. Despite his appearance, Ford does not immediately come across as an excellent chef capable of feeding not only himself but also a whole crowd of visitors. However, upon closer inspection, one can see the resemblance between Ford and his father, the renowned American actor Harrison Ford. Ben Ford is an impressively large man; describing him would inevitably involve the use of the word 'big'. With a big beard, big hands, and a large build, Ford is utterly confident that he resembles his father, the star of the Indiana Jones series, Harrison Ford. Ford Jr. believes that it is only the 'Hollywood diet' that prevents his father from 'growing' to his impressive size. There is some truth to this, as both father and son enjoy eating delicious and hearty meals. Ben Ford, due to his profession, does not have to limit himself, and he gladly takes advantage of it. He has a particular weakness for meat and cooks it in huge, 'manly' portions. His recently published book, 'Taming The Feast', is essentially an excellent collection of various recipes presented and designed in a 'macho' style. The recipes described in his culinary books are perfected in the kitchen of his Los Angeles restaurant, 'Ford's Filling Station'. Over the years, the menu at the restaurant has been refined to perfection. The unique homely atmosphere of the restaurant is created by following the principles taught to him by his mother. Through his books, Ben not only 'feeds' his readers but also aims to inspire them for something greater. It is not surprising that many recipes are intended for gatherings of 8-10 people, as some of Ben's fondest childhood memories are associated with large gatherings and big tables filled with generous portions of hearty food and a perhaps slightly excessive amount of alcoholic beverages. Ben Ford is the oldest of Harrison Ford's four children. His father's marriage to his first wife, former cheerleader Mary Marquardt, ended when Ben was only twelve years old. During this time, Harrison's acting career took off, and Ben Ford Sr. spent most of Ben's childhood working as a carpenter. Later on, Harrison married for the second time, and he now lives with his third wife, Calista Flockhart. Calista, Harrison, and Calista's 13-year-old son Liam often visit Ben's restaurant. A turning point in Ben Ford's life came after his father started earning significant amounts of money. The whole family went on vacation to Hawaii, and Ben was forever captivated by a local dish - a whole roasted pig on the beach. Ben Ford still has a certain weakness for whole roasted pigs to this day. When Harrison Ford was filming 'Raiders Of The Lost Ark', Ben would occasionally visit him on set. On weekends, they would always go out for lunch, not to a restaurant, but to someone's house. This further intensified Ben's love for Sunday barbecues. However, this love for delicious (although not entirely healthy) food would probably not have turned into a desire to create such food himself if it weren't for his mother. She was an excellent cook and regularly delighted her children with delicious dishes. Ben Ford has been unable to replicate his mother's legendary fried chicken for 28 years. However, this unreachable ideal is just about the only task that Ford Jr. hasn't been able to accomplish. Ben Ford became one of the first restaurateurs to offer dishes made from whole animals. He was also one of the first to hire specially trained gatherers who would search for the necessary herbs and roots in forests and greenery. Nowadays, every serious restaurant strives to have its own team of gatherers, but at that time, it seemed completely unimaginable.
